MEXICAN CRABS

ian's note:

The following excerpt within the brackets { … }, was taken from a social media as it was, after which my response ensued. As usual, keep an open mind when reading my article and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

-----------

{ Dear Parents,

* Tarzan lives half naked,
* Cinderella comes home at midnight,
* Pinocchio lies all the time,
* Aladdin is the king of thieves,
* Batman drives at 200 mph,
* Romeo and Juliet commit suicide out of love,
* Harry Potter uses witchcraft,
* Mickey and Minnie are more than just friends,
* Sleeping Beauty is lazy,
* Dumbo gets drunk and hallucinates,
* Snow White lives with 7 guys.

We shouldn’t be surprised children misbehave, they get it from their storybooks and cartoons which ''we'' provide them...

We should instead be teaching them stories like;

*Abu Bakr (ra)’s loyalty and undying service for his master,
*Umar ibn Khattaab (ra)’s love for justice and tolerance,
*Uthman ibn Affan (ra)’s level of shyness and modesty,
*Ali ibn Abi-Talib (ra)’s show of courage and bravery,
*Khalid ibn Waleed (ra)’s desire of combating evil,
*Fatima bint Muhammad (ra)’s love and respect to her father,
*Sallahuddin Al-Ayubi (ra)’s conquest of the promised land,

Above all, we should teach them about Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala).

If we are teaching our kids stories from the authentic Qur’an and Sunnah AND implementing it, InshaAllah they will never be lead astray.

A reminder for myself first and foremost. I got it from a (social media) group and want to share with everyone. }

Now, ian's response:

If the writer above extracted badness from Tarzan or Batman or Cinderella, then the writer has totally misconstrued the gist of lifelong stories and put everything out of proportion. One who must've been a real 'dumbo' who misbehaved due to misunderstandings from those stories. :-( 😡

If given the chance, one could also take those other recommended alternative stories and have it twisted out of context. Like, if a person goes to war, then he could be called a killer of God's creation. Or if a daughter had undying love for a father, they could end up committing incest. Or if a warlord conquers the promised land, he could also be a tyrant dictator who robs people of their property. And one could go on and on and on. So what's going to happen next? A total outcry by certain quarters who regulates and demonstrates 'inappropriate sensitivities', apparently also 'IS' for short, and both behaving similarly bad. Come to think of it, it's a wonder whether members of IS ever read those alternative stories recommended? And finally twisting them to suit their agenda.

If those alternative stories need be told to children, why not start telling the stories then? Why not endeavor to make it more popular on its own merits? They too are old stories. Why bring down other already popular stories common to parents who grew up with the likes of Tarzan or Cinderella or Snow White? Not all parents who read Batman or Tarzan or Cinderella turned out to be misbehaved. Especially when authors of those stories definitely had good intentions of morale in their stories.

Why bring down a rival just to show you're higher up? Isn't it better to prove one's worth by proving one's good deeds rather than stepping on others just to bring oneself higher up? It's what they call, a 'Mexican Crab'. Put all those crabs in a basket and watch them climb over each other to escape the basket. Real basket case.

In time to come, instead of going global and at peace, being respectful  and kind with one another, having harmony and oneness for all, the peoples of the world on the other hand, would be totally segregated by race, creed and color, all over again. How pathetic!

Let's look at it this way. In every anecdote, advice or rule, there are always two sides of a coin, or to put it indelicately, a double-edged blade would always cut both sides. The question is, which side do you choose to be on?

Me? I make sure my blade is constantly honed for sharpness. I may cut myself with it, but at least I'm sure it'll be a swift clean cut, painlessly at times. Having blunt knives in a kitchen are more dangerous than having them sharp.
